Inside the Zero-Waste Venue Plan

The venue team set a target that sounded implausible in January: divert ninety percent of event waste from landfill without changing a single thing about the attendee experience. The final figure was ninety-four percent.

Decisions made upstream

Almost none of the work happened during the event. It happened in procurement, months earlier, in the form of contracts that specified returnable crates, unbranded serviceware, and a catering partner willing to be measured on what came back rather than what went out.

By the time doors opened, the choices that would determine the outcome had already been made. The on-site operation was mostly a matter of not undoing them.

The part that nearly failed

Signage. Early trials showed that clearly labelled bins performed barely better than unlabelled ones when people were carrying a plate in one hand. The fix was fewer bin types, not better labels — a reduction from five streams to three lifted sorting accuracy by more than twenty points.
